Product Overview

Centralized network timing, control plane, and data plane elements define the Cisco ASR 900 Route Switch Processor (RSP). The Cisco ASR 900 Series RSPs, including the RSP3C models compatible with the A900-RSP3-100G license, address requirements of converged service provider networks from Carrier Ethernet to advanced services such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). The RSP3C modules enable innovative traffic management and intelligent packet-switching and routing features.

The Cisco ASR 900 Series RSP modules contain separate control plane and data plane components, including the main control plane CPU for Cisco IOS Software operating system and platform control software. Data-plane packet processing and traffic management is performed by the Carrier Ethernet ASIC.

• High Availability and Modularity: Optional intrachassis hardware redundancy for all components, software redundancy with In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) when paired. In ASR 903/907, one RSP active, one hot standby. Field-Replaceable Unit (FRU), Online Insertion and Removal (OIR) supported. Automatic switchover on active RSP failure.
• Management Interfaces: Out-of-Band (OOB) management including dual-mode console (USB or serial), Ethernet management port (no interaction with Carrier Ethernet traffic), USB port for flash devices to load IOS images and configurations.
