The Cisco A9K-TUNNEL-ENT is an ASR 9000 RTU (Right-To-Use) Smart License specifically designed for enabling Tunnel Protocols on Cisco ASR 9000 Series routers, including the compact high-capacity Cisco ASR 9901 Router. This license delivers essential functionality for advanced networking applications such as Layer 2 VPN (L2VPN), Layer 3 VPN (L3VPN), mobile backhaul, and Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) services. Part of the Traditional Business Model feature licenses, it ensures seamless integration with the Cisco IOS XR 64-bit operating system, providing carrier-class performance, scalability, and high availability.

ASR 9901 Router Compatibility and Capabilities

The A9K-TUNNEL-ENT license is fully compatible with the Cisco ASR 9901 Router, a Provider Edge (PE) router featuring an Integrated Route Switch Processor (RSP) with 32 GB RAM, 4-core 2.4 GHz Intel CPU, and 42 integrated ports: 16x1GE, 24×1/10GE (dual-rate), and 2x100GE. It supports mixing 1/10/40/100 Gigabit Ethernet pluggable interfaces (refer to Cisco Optics Compatibility Matrix). The distributed forwarding plane architecture ensures independent port forwarding for enhanced performance.

Advanced synchronization features include GPS for Stratum-1 clocking, BITS and SSU/DTI clock sources, and hardware-based IEEE 1588 Precise Time Protocol (PTP). Management is simplified with front-panel LEDs, embedded USB (eUSB) port, and console ports. Redundant AC/DC power supplies (A9K-1600W-AC or A9K-1600W-DC) and fan trays ensure high reliability.
