Cisco IOS XR Flexible Consumption Model Overview
Cisco IOS XR Routing products, including the ASR-9006-SYS, are powered by the industry-leading, carrier-class, 64-bit Cisco IOS XR Software. This operating system delivers operational efficiency, optimized utilization, and service agility through features like Pre-boot eXecution Environment (iPXE) boot, auto provisioning, native third-party application hosting, machine-to-machine interface, telemetry, and flexible software package delivery.
The IOS XR FCM addresses customer needs for simple, flexible consumption by allowing purchase of software capacity incrementally. For high-density deployments like the ASR 9000 Series, it permits paying for capacity as service demand rises, with investment protection via license portability across hardware.
Customer Value Proposition
- Reduce upfront capital with pay-as-you-grow structure and deferred software payments via subscription.
- Utilize capital efficiently through network-wide license pooling, eliminating stranded capacity.
- Simplify operations with two software suites: Essentials and Advantage.
- Protect investment by porting licenses to next-generation hardware.
Components of IOS XR FCM
The model comprises hardware (e.g., ASR-9006-SYS chassis), perpetual Right-To-Use (RTU) licenses, and recurring Software Innovation Access (SIA) subscriptions. RTU includes Essentials (basic routing/management) and Advantage (advanced features like L2/L3 VPN, Traffic Engineering, MACsec, SL-API, BNG). SIA terms: 36-59 months (xxx-SIA-3) or 60-120 months (xxx-SIA-5). Requires Cisco Smart Licensing for compliance, registration, and usage reporting.
Smart Licensing benefits: real-time visibility, centralized management, telemetry reports, flexible organization, and ease of setup via My Cisco Entitlements (MCE).
Software Suites
Essentials suite for basic transport (required for active ports, per-100G/400G/10G capacity). Advantage extends with advanced services (L2 advanced, L3 VPN, Peering, etc.). A-la-carte for platform-specific like BNG (ASR 9000). Available on ASR 9000 3rd/4th/5th Gen line cards starting IOS XR 7.4.1.
ASR 9000 Series Compatibility
The ASR-9006-SYS integrates seamlessly with FCM for ASR 9000 chassis and line cards. Minimum Essentials capacity based on line cards installed. Supports extensive line cards including 5th Gen (e.g., A99-4T-FC 4T), 4th Gen (e.g., A99-32X100GE-FC), 3rd Gen (e.g., A9K-48X10GE-1G-FC). Full list in specifications.
Platforms Supported by FCM
- Cisco 8000 Series (100G/400G licenses)
- ASR 9000 Series (Edge Essentials/Advantage per 100G/400G)
- NCS 5500/5700 Series (Core/Agg licenses)
- NCS 540/560 Series (Access per 10G/100G)
