Description
The Cisco ASR1000-RP3-32G-2P is a dual-pack bundle of Cisco ASR 1000 Series Route Processor 3 (RP3) modules, each equipped with 32 GB DRAM. Designed as the central control processor for carrier-grade IP and MPLS packet network infrastructures, the RP3 runs the Cisco IOS XE operating system, delivers advanced routing capabilities, and monitors/manages other ASR 1000 components including line cards, power supplies, and fans.
Key Capabilities and Architecture
- Full range of Cisco IOS XE Software features: QoS, MPLS, L2VPN, L3VPN, Application Visibility and Control, Performance Routing (PfR), AppNav, Data Center Interconnect, Crypto, IPv6
- Supports building and distributing forwarding information to Embedded Services Processors (ESPs)
- Implements Session Border Controller (SBC) setup/teardown and per-session policies for voice/video
- Stateful firewall policy configuration portal to ESP forwarding engine
- IPsec authentication, encryption, IKE negotiation/maintenance
- System management: Loads OS images to line cards, synchronizes dynamic states for redundant IOS XE, RP, ESP; high-availability failover; out-of-band console/aux/USB/Ethernet ports; direct kernel access on IOS failure; power/temperature monitoring
Cisco ASR 1000 Series Route Processors are categorized into modular (for ASR 1004/1006/1006-X/1009-X/1013) and fixed/built-in types. The RP3 is modular, field-replaceable, hot-swappable, with optional redundant-processor and dual IOS XE support for resiliency.
RP3 Specific Features
- Quad-core processor at 2.2 GHz
- Built-in eUSB/eMMC bootflash: 8 GB
- Memory scalability: 8/16/32/64 GB DRAM (32 GB in this bundle)
- Storage: 100 GB SSD default (upgradable to 200/400 GB HDD/SSD optional on some models), external USB
- Stratum-3 clock circuitry, BITS input/output
- USB ports: 2 ports supporting 1 GB compact flash
- Chassis compatibility: ASR 1006-X, 1009-X, 1013
Performance and Scalability
With 32 GB memory, supports up to 8,500,000 IPv4 routes or 7,500,000 IPv6 routes; BGP Route Reflector scalability up to 24,000,000 IPv4 or 17,000,000 IPv6 routes. Pay-as-you-grow memory upgrades enable routing-table growth, additional MPLS VPN instances, feature additions like SBC and broadband aggregation (BBA).
High Availability and Reliability
- 1+1 redundancy in dual-RP configurations
- Online Insertion and Removal (OIR)
- Nonstop Forwarding (NSF) and Stateful Switchover (SSO)
- In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU)
- Cisco IOS Software redundancy, NSF (requires 4 GB+ DRAM on RP1, default on RP2/RP3)
Connectivity and Management
- LAN ports: Single RJ-45 10/100/1000 management Ethernet
- Console and auxiliary ports (RJ-45)
- RJ-48 connectors for BITS input clocks/output source
- Network management: Telnet/SSH CLI, SNMP, RFC 2665, RFC 2737 MIBs compliant
LED Indicators (RP3)
- PWR: Green – All power rails OK
- STAT: Green – IOS booted; Yellow – BootROM loaded; Red – Failure/boot
- ACTV: Green – Active RP
- STBY: Yellow – Standby RP
- CRIT/MAJ/MIN: Red/Amber alarms
- HD/USB/BF: Flash green activity
- CARRIER/DTI: BITS status (Off/Green/Amber)
- LINK/DISK2: Ethernet/HDD activity
The RP3 integrates with the Cisco QuantumFlow Processor (QFP) for high-performance forwarding, QoS, and service flexibility in ASR 1000 chassis like ASR 1006/1006-X/1009-X/1013 supporting full RP redundancy.
