Description
The Cisco ASR 9902 Router is a compact, high-performance router that delivers up to 800 Gbps of nonblocking, full-duplex capacity in a 2-Rack-Unit (2RU) form factor. It is based on the Cisco IOS XR software image used across the ASR 9000 Series, enabling standardization on a single operating system while supporting multiple port rates including 100/40 Gigabit Ethernet, 25 Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet. This flexibility allows mixing and matching interface types on the same chassis, preparing operators for mass-scale networking.
As a redundant, multipurpose platform, the ASR 9902 serves diverse scenarios such as business PE, metro aggregation, cloud edge, internet peering, Data Center Interconnect (DCI), Broadband Network Gateway (BNG), internet edge, WAN core, WAN edge, WAN aggregation, border routing, and mobile edge in 4G/5G networks. Its compact depth of 19 inches (483 mm), front-to-back airflow, PTP Telecom profile support, and varied port rates enhance efficiency and deployment flexibility.
Key Features and Benefits
- Power-optimized architecture with high-density multi-rate ports and super service scales, reducing CapEx and OpEx while ensuring predictable, manageable service infrastructure.
- Compact design supporting two redundant Route Processors (RPs), integrated switch fabric, 2 AC or DC power supply modules, and 3 fans in redundant configuration.
- Fixed board includes 2 integrated QSFP-DD-based 100GE ports, 6 integrated QSFP28-based 100GE ports, 16 integrated SFP28-based 25GE/10GE dual-rate ports, and 24 integrated SFP+-based LAN/WAN (OTN) ports. All ports support MACSec.
- Maximum 800G data bandwidth with ports operating in various combinations.
- Route Processor features a 64-bit Intel CPU, 32GB memory, console and auxiliary serial ports, 2 management Ethernet interfaces, Class A USB port, GPS interface (10MHz, 1PPS, ToD ports), and 2 BITS interfaces.
- Transceivers compatible with ASR 9000 Series modular and compact chassis; QSFP-DD optics match QSFP28 mechanical characteristics; ports support 10GE, 25GE, 40/100GE; 1GE via smart SFP or nV Satellite.
Interface and Protocol Support
- Cisco Pluggable interfaces for mixing 10, 25, 40, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet types.

Redundancy and Reliability
- Fully redundant: 2 RPs, 2 power supplies, 3 fan modules.
- Software redundancy with Cisco IOS XR Software (64-bit): modular, patchable, scalable, highly available, carrier-core and edge-proven.
Deployment and Environmental
The chassis supports 2-post and 4-post 19-inch and 23-inch rack mounting with front-to-back airflow. It operates in temperatures from 41 to 104°F (5 to 40°C), humidity 10 to 85%, up to 4000m altitude (limitations with high-power optics apply). Storage: -40 to 158°F (-40 to 70°C), 5 to 95% humidity.
